Time for a break!

It’s fair to say I’ve been incredibly busy since returning to work 3 months ago after my maternity leave. I am incredibly grateful that I have had lots of clients coming my way (many of them being referrals from previous clients which is always so lovely).

It’s definitely time for me to take a few weeks off with my boys and have some much needed family time.

I already have several clients lined up for my return and will be back on Monday 15th taking calls!

Distracted feeders.

So once you are out of the newborn phase you may find your baby becomes very distracted by the world around them, meaning they no longer focus as much on their feeds. This can happen around 4 or 5 months of age. For us Iggy was the most distracted around 4.5 months. He literally would NOT feed! He was too busy looking at everything and everyone around him. I didn’t have the TV or radio on, I wouldn’t be talking on the phone and I was trying to feed in a room with no other people but he still would barely feed!

Then I read this tip and it really helped us so I thought I would share!

Try wearing a long necklace for baby to play with whilst they’re feeding. I used this teething necklace from @hexnex_jewellery that I actually bought when O was a baby. It worked a treat and he started feeding much better when I wore it!

Why not give it a try if your little one is a super distracted feeder! Just be careful with the necklace you chose so it isn’t sharp or have loose parts. A teething necklace works perfectly if you have one!

💤 Baby monitor

💤 Hatch machine - this is for white noise and I use a dim red light during our bedtime routine and for nighttime feeds.

💤 Travel cot

💤 Snoozeshade for the travel cot to block out light.

We actually bought this when O was a baby and it has been so useful for both kids. The cover fits around the travel cot and is breathable and allows air to flow freely. It blocks out 94% of the light meaning you don’t have to sit in darkness once the baby has gone to bed.

💤 Portable blackout blinds - a real holiday essential for me! We have rented many apartments with really thin curtains that don’t block any light.

These Tommee Tippee ones are great but before I had these I used to take a roll of black bin bags and cellotape 😂

Aluminium foil also works well! If you have the shiny side facing outwards it has the added bonus of reflecting the sun keeping the room cooler!

How to handle the heat!

So even as adults we can struggle to sleep in these temperatures (over 30 degrees in Amsterdam this week) and our little ones are no different. Here are some things you can try to help your little one to sleep in the hot weather:

☀️ Air the bedroom first thing in the morning by opening all windows before it gets too hot.
💤 Keep the blinds and curtains closed all day. If you do not have blackout blinds you can stick foil to the windows with the shiny side facing outwards. This helps to reflect the sun.
☀️ Add a fan to your little ones room. This helps to circulate the air and as an added bonus adds some nice white noise! Just make sure the fan is not pointed directly on baby.
💤 Dress baby appropriately. In very hot weather baby will be ok in a short sleeved vest or even in just a diaper under a 0.5 tog sleeping bag.

Holiday sleep essentials for our 4 year old.

💤 Hatch machine - we use this as a nightlight and as an ‘Ok to wake clock’.

O knows to stay in his bedroom until this light turns green (we have it programmed for 7am).

He has had a nightlight for around 1.5 years now. It is common for children around the age of 3 to become afraid of the dark so introducing a nightlight really helps. Just make sure it is red (or orange) in colour!

💤 Comfort item - O has had this blanket and bunny since he was 1 and still sleeps with them. They are a real comfort to him. Especially when travelling.

I had the pleasure of working with this family before my maternity leave. They were on an extended trip abroad at the time so my support was all done online.

This little lady took over an hour to go to bed on a night (after lots of rocking) at bedtime and through the night. She was also doing very short naps.

Her parents followed the plan I wrote very closely and this paid off as babes sleep improved very quickly. Long naps and a much quicker time falling asleep (independently) happened within the first days.

I actually bumped into mum this week (IRL!) and baby is still sleeping amazingly! She has recently started daycare where her naps have remained great, making it a much smoother process for her ❤️

We finally got the chance to meet my beautiful new nephew last week. He is 7 weeks younger than Iggy and I am so excited that he has a cousin the same age as him 💙

Bath time. A bath is a really lovely way to start

Bath time.

A bath is a really lovely way to start a bedtime routine. It is a great cue and can help little ones to distinguish day from night.

An ideal bedtime routine to follow the bath is:

* Brush teeth
* Massage
* Nappy and pjs
* Read a book
* Song and cuddle
* Into bed awake

It is important to stay consistent with your routine, keep it the same every night to help your little one get ready for bed.

Newborn sleep and the 4 month regression.

Iggy is now 4 months old and we are out of the newborn sleep phase.

He falls asleep completely independently as I started practising putting him down awake from around 8 weeks. I also made sure the environment was appropriate for him and gave him the opportunity to sleep at the right times.
Until recently he was waking once a night to feed, however now he is in the 4 month regression so he is waking mostly 2 or sometimes 3 times a night at the moment. This is because his sleep structure is changing and he now experiences light sleep phases during his sleep cycle. The reason he isn’t waking every hour (like some babies at this time) is because he can fall asleep independently.

So this guy hasn’t slept on me for a month. We did a feed 15 minutes after his lunchtime nap and he fell right back to sleep 🤦🏻‍♀️ He has been feeding a lot this last 2 days so I think he might be having a growth spurt.

This little guy is almost 2 months old so I thought it was time to check in and let you know how we’re doing!

I can’t believe how quickly time is going this time around. The days and weeks are flying by and I can’t believe he is almost 2 months!

We are doing well, as you can see from the picture he has recently started giving us some beautiful smiles 💙 He is very alert and interested in everything around him and it is so amazing watching him grow day by day.

Luckily feeding is going great. Especially after my difficulties feeding O I feel so grateful this time around that feeding has been pretty straightforward since day 1 and the little guy is growing really well.

For those wondering O is doing good too. He adores his new baby brother, he just gets frustrated sometimes when he can’t have his Mama as much as he used to and this is really showing in his behaviour sometimes. It seems to be getting better over time but I must admit I’m feeling ALL the Mama guilt about it. If I’m honest this is definitely the part I am finding the most challenging. It is so hard to try and give him enough of me when his baby brother needs me so much.

And finally sleep! He was doing really well and at 6.5 weeks he was starting to go into his crib to fall asleep himself for some of his naps and bedtime. This was done very gently and with no tears at all. I will do a post on this soon to explain how I did it.
However this week we are having some sleep challenges. There is a sleep regression at 8 weeks and the little guy has been refusing naps and then doing very short ones. Resulting in a very overtired baby. Due to his age I have been doing some more contact naps and on the go naps this past few days. Then once this phase has passed I will go back to putting him in his crib for his naps.

I am starting to think about work so will be posting a little bit more over the next weeks. I am also writing a blog post about how sleep has been this past few months.

Meet our latest addition 💙

This little guy came into the world very quickly on 13th January!

We are both doing really well. He is feeding and sleeping like a champ and Mama is completely besotted and enjoying every minute.

O is just loving him but is having to adjust to our new family dynamic.

Happy New Year to all of my lovely followers! Thank you for following me throughout this year.

2022 has definitely had its highs and lows.

It has been the year I started my business and I am enjoying it so much ❤️ My clients have been incredible and I have enjoyed working with them very much. Looking forward to picking back up in a few months time.

O started school this year and since then we have seen him grow up so much. He loves school and his Dutch has come on so much. He is much more confident speaking it and is also helping us with our ours 😂

We became pregnant this year for the second time and even though it has been an incredibly challenging pregnancy with complications we are very much looking forward to meeting our second little boy in the next few weeks 💙

The toughest thing about this year was another year away from family. Luckily we managed to get home in October for a few weeks to catch up with them and our friends in the UK, the first time we had seen them in almost 2 years. Really hoping that won’t be the case again and that we can get back in a few months with the baby 🤞🏼

I will be very quiet on here for the coming months but I will occasionally come on to share some baby pictures and updates on how we are doing 💙 I’ll be back sharing sleep tips as soon as I can.
