This family actually tried working with another sl

This family actually tried working with another sleep consultant but were not comfortable with the method so they found me whilst looking for a more gentle approach to sleep training.

When we met, all of this 6 month old baby's naps were short, he was waking multiple times during the night and it was often taking until 10pm for them to settle him to sleep.

I really enjoyed with working with this lovely family to help them achieve their sleep goals.

The Witching Hour.

Do you experience 'The Witching Hour' with your baby or toddler? This is the time in the late afternoon/early evening when they start becoming fussy, seem to cry for no reason and in the case of an older child they can become really hyper.

The main reason for this is due to overstimulation and or/overtiredness. Likely due to poor naps or being kept awake too long before bed.

So be sure to follow the appropriate wake windows for your little one and keep an eye on their sleepy cues (I have previous posts for both of these).

So give them the chance to nap at the appropriate times for their age and do not keep your child awake for longer than they can handle. If you do they may not sleep well and they may have a really hard time falling asleep.

Sleep Cues

So as well as following the appropriate wake windows for your little one (see one of my earlier posts) you also need to be watching out for their sleep cues.
Wake windows are the time that your little one can handle being awake between sleeps. The times given are per age but as we know all babies are different so it is important to keep an eye on them to see when it is time for their next sleep.

When you see the tiredness signs, this is when you should be putting them down for their next sleep. They will have an easier time getting to sleep if they are tired but not overtired.
Once they are overtired they will have a much harder time falling asleep and you may see more protest.

It’s my 100th post so I thought it I would do another introduction post as I have had lots of new followers since my last one.

My name is Joanne and the reason I became a sleep consultant is all thanks to my 4 year old son. He was a terrible sleeper and after much research and no success we decided to hire a sleep consultant. His sleep improved very quickly and I still say it was of the best decisions we ever made, despite wishing we had done it sooner. It changed our family for the better and meant we were all much more rested and happier!

I am originally from the North East of the UK but have lived in Amsterdam for over 3.5 years as we relocated for my husbands job.

Before my son came along I was a Maths teacher (which I loved) but moving abroad and being away from family meant that I decided to change career and went through extensive training to become a certified sleep consultant.

When I’m not working (and not running around after an incredibly energetic 4 year old) I love practising yoga and meditation. I also love nature and being outside. My favourite things to do are long hikes in the countryside with my husband, exploring new places and eating out (none of these happen as much as they did pre child!)

Night wakings.

If you have a Newborn then we would expect them to wake several times a night in the first weeks/months to feed. Once a baby reaches 4 months they may only be waking once per night to feed.

When baby is 6 months old, is feeding well during the day and is following their growth curve then they maybe ready to drop this night feed (however if you want to continue the night feed then this is completely fine!).

If you believe baby no longer needs a night feed but is still waking then we need to look at how they fall asleep at bedtime. If they are having help to fall asleep (feeding to sleep, rocking, stroking etc) then baby will inevitably wake up during the night.

The reason for this is because we sleep in sleep cycles. Once your little one has completed a sleep cycle (30-60 minutes depending on their age) they might briefly wake. If they had help to fall asleep at bedtime then they often need this help again to fall asleep during the night.

So for your little one to connect those sleep cycles themselves they need to be able to fall asleep independently. This is something that can be really tricky for some children so if you would like to know how you can help them get in touch. Proud.

This came up on my memories this week. 4 years ago and I was at my Graduation ceremony with a newborn baby.

This has got to be my proudest moment and this photograph holds such a special place in my heart.

Over 5 years I did a part time Open University degree whilst I was also teaching in a secondary school. It was such hard going and there were many times when I didn’t think I would make it through.

Then in my final year of study I found out I was pregnant, which meant I did my final exams when I was 7 months pregnant (the one bonus was that I got extra toilet breaks 😂)

So I graduated in Brighton with my family and a 4 week old baby.

Seems like a lifetime ago now!

Our little noisy sleepers.

You may already realise this but babies can be very noisy in their sleep. They grunt, shuffle, whimper all whilst asleep.

It’s very common for parent of babies (especially newborns) to think that as soon as baby makes a noise they are awake. So we can tend to go straight to baby and we end up disturbing them from their sleep.

So my tip would be to leave them for a few minutes. They might be passing into the next sleep cycle and we don’t want to be disturbing them if they are still asleep.

If baby is awake and hungry you will definitely know about it!

Sleeping blanket/comforter.

Anyone else get sucked into looking at old videos and photos of their little one?!

This was O at 1 year old. He has had this blanket since he was a baby but started sleeping with it when he turned 1 (it is not considered safe until this age). Now over 3 years later and he still sleeps with it every night, it is familiar and comforting to him.

If your little one is over 1 then I would really recommend introducing a blanket / stuffed animal / comforter. It can help to comfort them when they wake in the night, and also works great when you are on holiday or staying away from home. Having a familiar item such as this can really help them to settle when they are sleeping in a different environment.

Why I love working with Newborn babies! I started working with this family from day one. Simply by setting up good sleep habits from the start meant that this little lady naturally started sleeping through the night at 4 months old. This did not involve any crying or leaving the baby, it was just making sure the sleep environment and timings were appropriate.

This year I became a mother for the second time.
As a second time mum I knew how important it was for me to look after myself. So out of self care I started taking regular advice from Joanne. I had no idea you could already develop positive sleeping routines and patterns for a newborn.

Joanne was excited and happy to answer all the questions I had. She taught me the basics of sleep and the sleeping needs a baby / child has in various stages of their life. Also (which was a big bonus) she had tips for my own sleeping routine.

Within 4 months my baby girl started to sleep through the night, which made it so much easier for me to recover, get back to work and have more fun being a mother. I couldn't believe she would sleep through so fast, but Joanne never doubted our ability to make it happen. She kept on giving practical advice for me and my family to make it work.

Even to this day, I can still reach out to Joanne to get advice. I think what makes her so good at her work is that she empathises with my particular situation and gives advice based on that.
She is not fixed to her theories, but understands that every child and family is different and has a need for different advice.

I know some families wait to hire a sleep consultant up until the point where they are exhausted, perhaps in despair, and don't know what else to do.
I am so happy I asked Joanne when I clearly needed some help, so I was able to take care of my family and myself.

Working with Joanne is such a benefit to your family because everything works better when you get your rest and your little one is happily sleeping.
I couldn’t recommend her enough to new families.

Checking in. After over a month of health issues

Checking in.

After over a month of health issues and being able to do very little I am finally starting to feel better. So this meant that for the first weekend in 5 weeks I was actually able to spend some quality time with O.

He has really struggled whilst I have been unwell as he is so used to me being very present and active with him. So he doesn’t know how to handle it when I am not capable. I think this has been made worse by the fact he is in his first month at school and is already dealing with a huge transition (and exhaustion).

So I really took the time this weekend with him to be present and gave him lots of Mama love and attention. I can tell instantly what a difference it makes in his behaviour. He is calmer and much happier and content ☺️

It was a big reminder to me that I need to know my limits and stop pushing myself to breaking point as it doesn’t help any of us if I am then out of action for weeks.

I hope this is a reminder to others to just be careful. Know your limits and take some time when you need it. It’s not worth it to push yourself too hard and it doesn’t help anyone.

This could be rolling, crawling, walking, talking or any other developmental milestone. Your little one may find it hard to sleep when they are wanting to practise this new skill.

Make sure you give your little one plenty of chance during the day to practise this new skill, and be mindful of the fact it may disturb sleep.

Mobiles.

There are so many lovely mobiles that you can buy for your little one, and they are a great stimulant for them as their vision develops. They help your baby to develop some motor skills as they start to follow the objects with their eyes.

It is very common for parents to place the mobile over the crib, however I would advise against this as it can really be a distraction and can stop your baby from falling asleep.

How to quickly calm your overstimulated / hyper li

How to quickly calm your overstimulated / hyper little one?

Use a technique called Deep Pressure Stimulation (DPS). This is firm but gentle squeezing, hugs or holding that relaxes the nervous system.

Done properly this therapy triggers a chain reaction in the body that releases an overall sense of calm and peace.

I actually learnt about this technique around 2 years ago. Whenever O is overstimulated or having a hard time relaxing, I ask if I can give him a hug and then I wrap my arms around him and give him a firm but gentle squeeze and within less than a minute I can feel his body relax and he calms down instantly.

I have found this technique to be particularly useful at nap time and bedtime when maybe he was a bit overtired and finding it hard to settle.

So if your little one seems like they are overstimulated at bedtime and needs to calm down then give it a try.

When sickness disturbs night sleep.

So O was really unwell for a few days over the weekend/beginning of the week.

He is usually a great sleeper however for 3 nights he woke during the night due to feeling unwell.

Usually if I ever hear O during the night I leave him and he generally resettles himself quickly. However when he is sick I will go to him straight away to see how he is and what he needs.

During these night wakes he generally needed a cuddle, medicine and a little drink. This only ever lasted around 3/4 minutes and then I left him to settle back to sleep.

So my top tips to deal with night wakings when your little one is sick:

💤 Respond straight away during night wakes and see what they need (medicine/drink/maybe a milk feed for a baby)

💤 Check they are as comfortable as they can be.

💤 Leave them to settle back to sleep.

💤 If you are worried and don’t want to leave them then you should sleep in their room rather then bring into your bed.

💤 The problem with bringing them into your bed is that even when the sickness is over you might have a really hard time getting them back into their own bed.

💤 A hot and steamy shower can help clear out a stuffy nose before bed.

Night feeds.

💤 If your baby is younger than 6 months then yes there is a large chance they are waking due to hunger. If baby is on track with their weight and they were not born prematurely then between 4 and 6 months baby may need 1 night feed. Although I do know babies that have started sleeping through from 4 months without waking for one.

💤 If older than 6 months and baby is waking more than once then this could be due to 2 reasons.

1️⃣ They might have got into the habit of not feeding enough during the day and so are making up for their calories at night. If you think this is the case, then during daytime feedings make sure there are no distractions as this can really disrupt feedings. Also if you feed after a nap rather than before baby should be less tired and therefore able to have a fuller feed.

2️⃣ Another reason they could be waking more at night is due to habit. Baby may rely on feeds to get back to sleep. In this case when you hear baby wake at night, try leaving them for 5-10 minutes to give them a chance to resettle themselves (sometimes they can). If baby is very upset then you can always try and resettle without feeding. Sometimes sending in the non feeding partner for night wakes can help with this.

💤 If your baby is waking frequently and you are not sure they need the feeds then check with your little one’s doctor.

💤 If you would like more advice about how to reduce night feeds, then get in touch. I often work with families and we keep in a night feed. It is still possible to do this and make sure sleep quality is better for all of you!

So O has had a the same bedtime routine for almost

So O has had a the same bedtime routine for almost 2 years and it works great for us. It is calm, helps him to get wound down for bed and means that he goes to bed (and to sleep) with no issues.

This week however has been another story. Due to starting school this week he has been absolutely exhausted by 5pm and so by bedtime he is overtired and it has been much harder than usual (with lots of meltdowns thrown in there too).

I kept the order of the routine the same but on Wednesday I started to shift up the time by 30 minutes meaning that he wasn’t quite as overtired. It was still tough but it was more manageable doing it slightly earlier.

I am doing my best to remain calm, not shout and just give him the space to get upset if he needs it. Just sat close by offering a hug when he needs it.
This can be really difficult sometimes (especially when I am also tired) but it means the storm passes quicker and then he goes to bed calm and ready to sleep.

So I am sticking to our routine (apart from the earlier time) and I know that once he is more used to being at school things will go back to how they were.

CONSISTANCY - one of the most important things we can give our little ones. Whether it’s their routine or sleep. They need it so much to feel safe and secure.

Naps on the go.

This is a throwback to January 2020. This is the last time we saw O’s little cousin 😢
We had a fun day out at the zoo and the boys zonked out in their strollers on the way home.

Whilst it’s best for our little ones to have naps in their beds, it’s also totally fine to have them on the go sometimes too.

I remember this day so clearly as O was still taking a midday nap at this point but he has missed it due to our day out. I remember being relieved at 4pm when he fell asleep in his stroller. I let him do a quick 30 minute catnap to tide him over until bedtime and it meant that I didn’t have an overtired boy on my hands (which would have meant a REALLY tough bedtime).

Another good time for a stroller nap is when your little one is in a nap transition and they just can’t quite make it until bedtime. Give them a quick catnap in the stroller (or car) and it should make bedtime a lot smoother!

Back to school tips.

Has your child been going to bed later than usual over the summer? This is very common and is ok! However now that the new school/preschool year is around the corner it is time to think about getting things back on track so that your child isn’t going to be too tired.

💤 Children up until the age of 12 should be going to bed before 8pm and they should be getting 10-12 hours of sleep a night.

💤 So if your child has been going to bed later than this, start moving up bedtime by 15 minutes every 3 days until they are back to their usual bedtime.

💤 Make sure screens are turned off 2 hours before bed as this blue light really can cause problems with your child falling asleep.

💤 Make sure you have a consistent and relaxing bedtime routine. This should be the same every night as this predictability will make it easier for your child to fall asleep.

💤 If your child is dragging out the routine (longer time in the bath, one more story etc) try using a timer to keep on track.

💤 As night times are still lighter at the moment it might be worth investing in a black out blind to make sure all of the light is shut out.
